Spanish
Intent
At South Failsworth Primary School, our intent is that the languages curriculum is taught so that our children develop an interest in learning other languages in a way that is enjoyable and stimulating. We aim to embed the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing necessary to enable children to use and apply their Spanish learning in a variety of contexts. We intend to foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world, in particular the Spanish culture and that of Spanish speaking countries. Even though we teach Spanish, we strive to stimulate and encourage children’s curiosity about all languages and help them develop transferable skills and knowledge that will support them in learning different languages in the future. The intention is that they will be working towards becoming life-long language learners
Implementation
As many of our teachers are non-specialist teachers, we use the iLanguages scheme of work and resources to offer a relevant, broad, vibrant and ambitious foreign languages curriculum that will inspire and excite our pupils using a wide variety of topics and themes. The curriculum is progressive and provides opportunities for pupils to acquire new vocabulary and knowledge, revise and consolidate previous learning and a range of opportunities for applying their knowledge and skills in reading, listening, speaking and writing. The thematic topics build upon previous topics and the nature of the topics will stimulate the children’s interest.
The curriculum provides an appropriate balance of spoken and written language and lays the foundations for further foreign language teaching at key stage 3. It enables pupils to understand and communicate ideas, facts and feelings in speech and writing, focused on familiar and routine matters, using their knowledge of phonology, grammatical structures and vocabulary. In addition to delivering weekly sessions following the iLanguages scheme of work, teachers will provide regular opportunities in between weekly sessions for pupils to practise and recall new, recent and past Spanish learning - the ‘drip feed effect’.
Impact
The impact of our languages curriculum is that our children will become lifelong language learners with the knowledge and skills necessary to communicate confidently in Spanish and importantly the skills and knowledge needed to be a successful linguist. Our curriculum will prepare children for further languages learning at key stage 3 and for some beyond this. In addition, our languages curriculum will strengthen and develop our children’s curiosity and respect for other cultures and provide them with a deep understanding of the Spanish culture in Spain and other Spanish speaking countries. Languages is monitored by the subject lead using a range of strategies such as book scrutiny, assessments, lesson observations and pupil interviews to establish the impact of the MFL curriculum.
